Holiday Reminder: Check that your Passport and Travel Policy are valid!
Summer holidays are just around the corner, and many of us across Ireland are getting ready to jet off for some sunshine abroad. However, before you start booking flights and packing your bags, there are a few important things to check: your passport and travel insurance.
Now’s a great time for Irish citizens to take a quick look at their passports expiry dates. Currently, a straightforward adult passport renewal typically takes approximately 10 working days. But with the busy summer travel season coming up, it’s wise to give yourself plenty of time, just in case.
Good news: you can renew your Irish passport from anywhere in the world using Passport Online. If you’re 18 or over, your passport will be valid for 10 years once renewed. You can apply for a new passport if your current one is due to expire within the next 12 months.
If you’ve never had an Irish passport before, or if your last one was issued more than 15 years ago, you’ll need to make a first-time adult application. You can also request a passport card when applying online, which is handy for travel around the EU!
Apply Online
To apply online, here’s what you’ll need:
- Your current passport.
- A digital photo.
- An email address.
- A credit or debit card.

What It Costs
The cost of your passport depends on what you choose and where you live. Here’s a quick guide to online prices:
- Standard adult passport (10 years) – €75.
- Large 66-page passport (10 years) – €105.
- Standard passport + passport card bundle – €100.
- If you’re applying from outside Ireland, there’s an extra €15 postal fee.
Lost, Damaged or Stolen Passport?
If your passport has gone missing or been damaged, don’t worry; you can report it and apply for a new one online. It’s the fastest and safest way to make sure your old passport can’t be misused. You’ll need:
- A digital photo that meets the guidelines.
- A debit or credit card.
- Access to a printer.
- An email address.
The application will guide you through any other documents you might need. If you’re abroad and your passport is lost or stolen, contact the nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate. You may need an emergency travel document to get home. If your passport is damaged, you’ll need to send it in when applying for a replacement. It’s also important not to travel with it.
Other Ways to Apply for a Passport
Passport Online is the fastest and easiest way to renew your passport. However, if you’re in Ireland, Northern Ireland, or Great Britain and prefer to use a paper form, that’s fine, too. Just apply through the Post Passport service.
