Ireland’s New Driver Number Rules For 2025

Irish driving licence showing driver number required for car insurance in 2025

From 31 March 2025, all drivers in Ireland will need to provide their driver number when buying or renewing their motor insurance. This update forms part of a new government initiative designed to make Irish roads safer and to help reduce uninsured driving.

What’s Changing?

When you buy or renew your car insurance policy, you’ll now be asked to provide:

  • Your own driver number, which you can find in Section 4(d) of your Irish driving licence or learner permit.
  • The driver numbers of any named drivers included on your car policy.

Without this information, insurers in Ireland will not be able to issue or renew your policy, so it’s important to have these details ready in advance.

Why Is This Being Introduced?

This new rule helps maintain the accuracy of the Irish Motor Insurance Database. This database is updated daily and used by the Garda Síochána to confirm whether a vehicle is insured and if the driver holds a valid licence. Ensuring all information is kept up to date helps reduce uninsured driving and improve road safety across Ireland.

What Drivers Should Do

Next time you renew or purchase a motor insurance policy, have your driver’s number ready, along with the details of any other drivers on the policy. This will help avoid any delay in setting up your cover.
