Breakdown Cover

Breakdown Cover is also known as Roadside Assistance. It always seems to happen when you least expect it. Your vehicle won’t start or comes to an abrupt halt, or you might have a problem with a flat tyre. Breakdown Assistance will cover you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If your vehicle breaks down in your driveway or out on the road anywhere in Ireland, it may also cover you for travelling around Europe.

Is Breakdown Assistance included on my car insurance policy?

It is important to note that not all car insurance policies will cover you for breakdown assistance. It generally comes as standard on Fully Comprehensive policies and may have to be added as an optional extra to Third Party and Third Party Fire and Theft policies.

What does Breakdown Assistance cover?

If your car breaks down, the insurance company will send a mechanic out to help you get back on the road again. If your vehicle cannot be repaired on the roadside, the insurance company will usually arrange for your car to be towed to the nearest garage.

The following benefits are typically covered; however, we recommend you review your motor insurance policy schedule and terms of business to confirm what is and is not covered by your policy. Benefits can vary depending on the insurer. Terms and conditions will vary, and limits will apply.

• Vehicle broke down or unable to start due to engine failure
• Flat tyre
• Dead battery
• 1 hour’s free roadside labour
• If the vehicle can’t be repaired, it will be towed to the nearest garage
• Completion of your journey, i.e. onward transport for you and your passengers home or to your intended destination.
• Replacement vehicle while your car is being repaired.
• Overnight accommodation is generally for one night, subject to a maximum value outlined on your policy schedule.
• Home Start help if your car breaks down outside your home.
• European Cover is an additional benefit and can be purchased if you travel to Europe.

Motor Breakdown covers you when your vehicle has broken down, and you cannot continue your journey. Other benefits can include assistance if you run out of petrol or diesel, have a flat tyre, have battery failure or if you have locked your keys inside your car. If your vehicle breaks down, call the insurance company. They will take your details and send a qualified mechanic to repair the vehicle, usually within 45 minutes, but this can vary depending on location.

Breakdown Assistance will give you and your family peace of mind when travelling throughout Ireland, the UK or Europe. No matter how well-prepared you are, breakdowns can and will happen. So whether the policy is for yourself, your children, or an elderly relative, you can rest assured that they will have 24-hour assistance if they cannot complete their journey.

It is worth noting that breakdown assistance generally comes as standard on fully comprehensive car insurance policies. Thank you for visiting our breakdown assistance blog.
